According to fashion trade journal WWD, there will be a Rei Kawakubo exhibition next spring at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. If the rumours are true, this will be only the second time that a living designer has been the focus of the renowned exhibition, following the Yves Saint Laurent retrospective in 1983.
Founder and Creative Director of Comme des Garçons Rei Kawakubo is without a doubt one of the most influential designers of our time. Her biography on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s website says: “Kawakubo’s empire combines an industrially inspired socialist work ethic with a nearly fanatical desire to purvey clothing as an ever-changing product of its sociocultural environment, citing both neorealism and futurism in runway collections and advertising.”
There is something quite magical about Fashion and Art being fused together. Scroll through the photos at the top to see some of our favourite looks by the designer.
