As most of us are aware, successful Spanish retailer Zara has been renowned for their tendency to appropriate different designs from other clothing brands- independent or not.

The brand has already faced several lawsuits in the past. This time the allegation came from Brother Vellies’ Creative Director Aurora James, who publicly confronted Zara on instagram.

The sensitive part of this matter is that Brother Vellies is a brand that generates sustainable artisanal jobs in South Africa, Kenya and Morocco. In 2015 Aurora Jones won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize due to the positive effect her work has had socially.

The last scandal Zara was involved in came from an independent artist Tuesday Bassen who claimed they copied her badges designs and although she had sufficient proof of the evident plagiarism the case didn’t get far as she “wasn’t relevant enough”.

Hopefully things will start to change and the work of talented young creatives will be respected. Meanwhile check the amazing clothes produced by Brother Vellies here
